What is executive coaching, and how is it different from consulting or therapy?

Executive coaching is a confidential, one-on-one partnership between a trained coach and a senior leader. Unlike consulting, the coach does not tell you what to do. Unlike therapy, the focus is forward-looking and performance-oriented. At Nayan Leadership, Dr. Dhru uses the Ikigai Aperture framework to help leaders examine the invisible lens through which they make decisions, lead teams, and define success.

Who is executive coaching for?

Executive coaching at Nayan Leadership is designed for C-suite executives, VPs, senior directors, founders, and business owners in the Washington DC area and nationwide. What is the Ikigai Aperture framework?

The Ikigai Aperture is a proprietary leadership philosophy created by Dr. Dhru Beeharilal. It uses the metaphor of a camera lens to help leaders examine the invisible filters — beliefs, identity, purpose — through which they interpret the world and make decisions. The framework has three layers: Absolute Identity (your unchanging core), Contextual Identity (how you adapt across roles), and The Lens (the filter through which all experience passes). When the lens is clean, leadership becomes clearer.

How can AI help leaders and organizations?

AI is transforming how leaders operate — from decision-making to strategic planning to daily operations. Nayan Leadership helps executives understand and integrate AI into their leadership practice, not as a replacement for human judgment, but as an amplifier. Do you work with leaders outside of Washington DC?

Yes. While Nayan Leadership is based in the Washington DC metro area, Dr. Dhru works with leaders across the United States and internationally via video. The Tanren Retreat takes place in Tokyo, Japan. Coaching engagements are conducted virtually, with occasional in-person sessions available for DC-area clients.

What does a typical coaching engagement look like?

Most engagements last six months, with biweekly sessions of 60 to 90 minutes. The work begins with a deep-dive assessment using tools like the Leadership Circle Profile, Hogan Assessments, and the Ikigai Aperture diagnostic. From there, every session is tailored to what is most alive for you as a leader — not a preset curriculum.

How do I know if I am ready for executive coaching?
