You’ve built something real. So why does it feel like something’s missing? Revenue. Respect. Results. And yet — quietly, persistently — there’s a gap. Tanren is for the men who won’t ignore it.
Apply for the Next RetreatTanren (鍛錬) is a Japanese word with no clean English translation. It means something like forging through repeated trial — the process a swordsmith uses to fold steel hundreds of times until what remains is harder, sharper, and more itself than when it started.
That’s what this retreat is. Not a seminar. Not a workshop. Not another framework to add to your shelf. A three-day immersion in Tokyo designed to do one thing: strip away what’s accumulated and return you to what’s essential.
Six to eight men. One cohort per season. No spectators.
Two weeks out, you’ll receive a preparation guide. Not homework — more like a set of questions to sit with. By the time you land in Tokyo, you’ll already be in the work.
You arrive as strangers. By midnight, you won’t be. The first evening is designed to collapse the social distance that makes real conversation impossible. No icebreakers. No name tags. Just men, a table, and the kind of honesty that only happens when the usual rules are suspended.
You wake at 5 a.m. to temple bells. The streets of Tokyo are still dark. The men around you become mirrors. You see yourself reflected in their struggle, their honesty, their refusal to look away. A founder twice your age cracks open about his marriage. An executive you’d normally compete with admits he’s terrified. By noon, you’re not the same person who woke up. You’re being forged.
The last day is about landing. What did you see? What are you taking home? What are you leaving behind? You’ll leave with a single, clear commitment — not a list, not a plan. One thing that changes when you walk back into your life.
Men who apply to Tanren already know something about themselves: they’re winning on the outside, and it’s not enough. They know the difference between success and meaning. They’re ready to stop pretending.
This retreat is not for you if you’re looking for tactics, networking, or a vacation with a keynote.

If what you’ve read has landed somewhere real — not just interesting, but true — that’s worth paying attention to. Tanren is not open enrollment. Every participant is vetted. The men matter as much as the work.
